A total solar eclipse is a once in a lifetime experience and excitement is already mounting about this weeks eclipse on 12 August 2026 which will be visible in a huge arc from the ice scapes of Greenland, through the volcanic grandeur of western Iceland and all the way down to balmy Mallorca.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. When the Sun, Moon and Earth line up exactly, it creates a total eclipse.

A total solar eclipse creates a moment of near-complete darkness, while partial eclipses are more like twilight.

While every eclipse is special, the location can further enhance the experience. Imagine the delight of witnessing a totally eclipsed Sun on a warm Mallorca August evening (keeping everything crossed for clear skies), suspended just above the horizon, minutes before sunset and then – pop ! –  it’s gone and you are plunged into darkness !

Totality in 2026 will be brief across Spain, and on Mallorca it will last 1m 34s . The partial eclipse begins at 19:38 p.m. local time when the Sun is just 12° above the horizon. Totality will follow at 20.31 until 20.33pm. with the Sun 2½° above the western horizon.
