Portella Palma

Blink and you could miss luxury 5* Hotel Portella with its discreet entrance at No.9 Calle de la Portella in Palma’s old quarter.

Its understated exterior is all part of the plan. Not a typical hotel, with a reception desk and fixed schedules, but a home for guests where everything from check-in to your breakfast order is informal and person-to-person.

Opened in 2024 by the same team behind über chic Casa Bonay in Barcelona, this immaculately refurbished 17th-century palace, whilst hidden away in the streets of Palma’s Arab Quarter, is just a short stroll from all the city’s attractions.

Paris-based Festen Design Studio and local architect Gras Reynés have created a calm space retaining many of the building’s original features, exposed stone walls, ornate archways and marble staircases which complement perfectly the Mallorcan fixtures and fittings such as statement lighting throughout from Gordiola’s legendary craftsmen in glass and hand-made Santanyí stone floors inspired by the neighbourhood’s Moorish heritage.

Your arrival into the light-filled white washed courtyard, dotted with plants and the soothing sound of water from the centre-piece fountain is a welcome sanctuary and will gently sooth any travel stress you may have had.

There are 14 individually decorated rooms comprising doubles and suites and all set around the central courtyard; a maze of arched hallways wind past their doorways, leading up to a rooftop terrace with views across to Palma’s magnificent cathedral.

All have terracotta flooring and are decorated in natural hues with pops of colour in the sumptuous upholstery. The cosy rooms on the upper floors are delightful with their sloping exposed wood-beamed ceilings.

Marble bathrooms include walk-in showers and freestanding baths. All suites include kitchens and some have connecting rooms.

The Arab Baths Apartment is a triumph, vast at 70 m², and is flooded with natural light. It accommodates four people in two four-poster beds and has a large private terrace with views of the historic Arab Baths next door.

There’s a rooftop terrace where you can relax after a hard day’s sightseeing. Guests can enjoy cocktails or kitchen service through the day while taking in the rooftops of the city skyline.

There is also a cosy hammam, steam bath and a gym.

Portella Hotel offers a unique comfortable city sanctuary with intimate five star service from the friendly in-house team.

Something Different

Your home away from home.

Forget you have a room key in your pocket and imagine you are staying with friends for a city break.

The team may enquire about your plans for the day, will welcome you back and want news about how you spent your day, offer a drink or a snack and whether you have plans for dinner. Not a typical hotel.

If you don’t mind just a few more steps, Portella Hotel is a homely sanctuary away form the hustle and bustle of the city.

What's Special

For a small boutique hotel, it is unusual to have an in-house chef. But at Portella, with its relaxed vibe, ‘my house is your house’ don’t be shy of asking for a specific dish or special product from the local market. No problem.

The hotel kitchen is open throughout the day, offering a selection of seasonal dishes specialising in Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare using the finest local and artisanal products. Dining is in the palace room, casually on the patio, on the rooftop with its views or in the privacy of your room.

Restaurants

Breakfast is the highlight of the day, served from 08.00am -1.00pm. An à la carte menu of delicious savoury dishes including many egg options and overflowing with local delights such as sobrasada sausage, seasonal fruit and freshly baked pastries.

All day dining from the in house chef.
