The Formentor Peninsula plays host to numerous film sets and television adverts and when you visit you will see why. It’s unique coastal road, flanked by cliffs rising to 300 metres, leading to a lighthouse that crowns the summit of the cape. Meandering around the Formentor peninsula in a labyrinth of curves, the road was built by Italian engineer Antonio Parietti in the 1930. Just a finger of land, at the most northern tip of Mallorca, pointing across the water to its sister Balearic island of Menorca.
To reach the lighthouse is a roller coaster of twists and turns especially if you are on two wheels, with spectacular views. Some 13 km from Port de Pollensa, the scenery begins with pine woods and glimpses of crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches.
The road then begins to climb higher, becoming more rugged and wild exposing sheer cliff drops. A look-out point along the way, Mirador del Mal Pas, is one of the busiest photo stops, daring you to peek hundreds of metres below at the swirling turquoise blue sea.
During the busy seasons ( May to October ) motorists are halted towards the end and asked to hop on a bus to the lighthouse.
When you arrive, take in that view and of course lots of photos. Marvel at the old lighthouse which has stood on the same spot since 1863. Watch the lycra clad cyclists arrive to drink a celebratory beer ! For a different perspective of the Peninsula, take a boat cruise to Cap de Formentor during the summer with Lanchas La Gaviota Cruises of Port de Pollensa.
If you look hard enough from the Formentor Peninsula, you might just see someone waving back at you from across the water in Menorca!
