Mallorca Wine Tours offers you the opportunity to visit some of the best bodegas and wine estates on Mallorca.
Whilst wine production on the the island dates back to Roman times, it is only in more recent years that it has become better known for its viticulture and now produces some exceptional wines.
Historically Mallorca´s economy was largely agricultural but, in 1960´s and 1970´s when it changed to accommodate mass tourism, much of the planted vine area was lost and there was a change to a more boutique style of bodega.
Co-inciding with the growth of agrotourism and the arrival of more high-end travellers, there was a shift in the industry towards producing a superior quality of wine.
Most wine is grown in two denominations of origin (´DO´) : Binissalem in the centre and Pla i Llevant in the east of the Island.
But don´t restrict yourself to DO wine, as some of Mallorca´s best wineries choose to opt out and are simply designated either Vi de la Terra Mallorca or Vi de la Terra Serra de Tramuntana- Costa Nord.
The varieties of grape indigenous to Mallorca, Manto Negro, Callet and Prensal blanc (or Moll), make its wines unique. Some producers machine pick their harvest and some choose to hand pick, almost unheard-of these days but possible here with the bodegas being so small.
It is a much more expensive method but makes for a higher quality end product. Few wines are exported and most are drunk locally by the island´s fortunate residents and its discerning visitors.
So why not visit some of these lovely boutique bodegas and allow Mallorca Wine Tours to organise a fabulous day out.
The most popular is the Gourmet Wine Train tour. This unique form of transport allows you to stop in the vineyards where you will have the chance to try several wines including some from the oldest winery of Mallorca along with the best Jabugo jamón, cured cheeses, Mallorcan sobrasada, coca de trampo, etc.
Or you may opt for one of Mallorca Wine Tours bicycle tours, where you will enjoy spectacular scenery, cycling along country lanes and pedaling straight into the wineries!
There is also a Palma wine tour, a helicopter tour and a boat tour ! Or for those who have time and really want to get to know their Manto Negro from their Prensal Blanc, then book a private wine tour (min 2 people ) and soak up the knowledge of your local guide.
Julian Panádes, the owner of Mallorca Wine Tours, comes from a long-line of winemakers and he and his team are widely regarded as the most experienced on the island.
So if you enjoy a tipple then make sure you include a wine tour on your holiday itinerary.
