Castell Son Claret located in the southwest of the island at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains and just minutes from the delightful village of Es Capdellà, is one of the smartest hotels on Mallorca.
The main house had it´s history first recorded in the 15th Century with the castle facade we see today constructed in the early 19th Century. Here, ´one´s home literally is one´s castle´ and the hotel exudes tranquility and elegance.
Uncovered and restored to its former glory by a German couple, Mr and Mrs Kühne, this vast private 325-acre estate of Castell Son Claret is unparalleled in size on the island.
All rooms and suites have natural oak-wood flooring or sanded marble, walls are stained oak or pastel beige, beds have luxurious bedding ensuring a good night’s sleep, huge walk-in showers, lavish bath tubs and room and suites have either a sizeable garden, terrace or Juliet balcony.
Some of the rooms are located in the main house, some in the grounds, a couple of the suites even have their own pools. As a savvy off-seasoner why not slash out and treat yourself to one of the two castle tower suites? Each has a spacious balcony offering both a private sunbathing spot as well as views over the estate gardens and Tramuntana Mountains beyond.
On the lower ground floor you will find the spa, an essential element of this hotel, offering a salted pool set at 29 degrees, sauna, ice and steam rooms. There is even a hamman, in which you can luxuriate in a special two hour treatment involving full body scrub and mask, followed by all over moisturise and massage. Heaven!
There is also an extensive Spa Menu that you can work your way through with their highly qualified therapy team. The hotel offers an exclusive Spa Day with Lunch for MallorcanTonic clients for those of you unable to stay this time. Castell Son Claret Spa Day with Lunch.
Foodies will also be delighted to discover the hotel is home to the Two Michelin Starred Zaranda, as well as the more casual Olivera Restaurant.
Most definitely it has to be the sublime location.
As the gates open revealing a long sweeping drive planted with numerous towering palms and flowering jacaranda borders, it is as if you are arriving at your own stately home.
The beauty of the Mallorcan countryside is reflected in the lovingly created gardens that surround Castell Son Claret. Beginning with the gardens directly in front of the house, planted with swaths of bergamot, vetiver, jasmine, coriander and roses all coming together to create a very special scent that awakens your senses as you pass through it on the way to the main house and, in the distance groves of almond, orange, lemon, persimmon and pomegranate trees.
There are even two century old olive trees, El y Ella (his and her) standing testament to the passage of time.
Take a walk down any number of the marked paths distributed all over the estate, follow the 7 kilometre walking trail that leads through unspoiled countryside or hop on one of the hotel bikes for a little pedal-power.
You will find, on your travels, hidden areas in the Moorish garden inviting you to sit and enjoy the beauty and solitude.
Without question, the food and the stars.
Two Michelin stars to be precise, (the second awarded in November 2015, the team pictured below celebrating the accolade) awarded to Fernando Pérez Arellano and his team at the in-house Restaurant Zaranda, which offers a truly memorable gastronomic experience.
Fernando and his team use market-fresh, local ingredients to prepare extraordinary cuisine. Fernando left nothing to chance when he arrived on the island, persuading many of his team to travel with him when he left Madrid!
Enjoy the chefs table watching the team “live” in the Zaranda kitchen. This unique culinary experience can be booked for up to 12 people.
The restaurant offers a view into the kitchen so guests can catch a glimpse of the chefs at work and, in the warmer months, the tables of the restaurant are arranged in the romantic courtyard of the Castell. High-quality wines from the hotel’s private and well-stocked cellar complement the menu perfectly.
Happy to share the secrets of their culinary art, a `cooking class´ can be arranged. You could try the “Tapas Master Class” or the “Burrata show”, where the Burrata is produced from local goat´s milk, or arrange a cooking class of your own preferences.
In addition to Zaranda, the Olivera terrace restaurant offers a breakfast buffet ‘a la casa’ in the morning. Boasting its own in-house baker, offering several types of bread some with olive oil, olives, alioli and even seasoned almonds.
Light Mediterranean dishes and snacks are served during the day as well as a lunch menu.
In the evening Olivera offers the typical Spanish-Mediterranean cuisine a la carte.
