Hotel Can Mostatxins : Frare sits in the historic heart of Alcudia´s labyrinth of small streets.
Owner Mark Worthington could not pass up the chance of owning ´the house next door `to his already hugely successful venture Can Mostatxins : Quinze which opened just 3 years ago.
The property (`Frare´meaning friar, harking back to when the church owned the land on which the house stands) was built in 1882 in Spanish modernist style by a wealthy local merchant family .
As you enter Frare, you are wowed by the high ceilings, the grand central staircase, the wrought iron work and the stained glass windows.
Leading off from the `entrada´ is the newly opened restaurant and, to the rear of the property, the sun-trap courtyard pool area with is crisp white paved terrace and sun loungers is set to become one of the island´s coolest chill-out areas, especially with the champagne bar just a few paces away.
As with its sister hotel, the plunge pool at Frare is heated and is open 24 hours a day. Serve yourself a glass of bubbly, slip into the pool and look to the sky day or night sky, your choice!
Each room has soft furnishings in a palate of vibrant colours tying in perfectly with the modernist theme. Treat yourself to one of the executive rooms and really spread out or perhaps even the two room suite as a luxury low season traveler.
The in-house restaurant, Apolonia, is set to become one of Mallorca´s `go to´ restaurants. Hotel Frare has an impressive line-up of chefs, Mike Hamilton of Muddy Duck in Oxfordshire and Cristina Lopez from Marc Fosh Michelin-starred restaurant in Palma.
Adults only, Can Mostatxins Frare, with its sister property next door offers a tranquil retreat situated in one of the prettiest towns on the island and minutes from the beaches of the north of Mallorca. Don’t miss this gem.
With a nod to the history of the house, each room is named after a famous Spanish Modernist painter. Room 2 for example will feature a piece by Joan Miró and Room 6 a piece by Salvador Dali. My personal favourite is the painting in Room 1 by Joaquín Sorolla called ´Mending the Sail ` 1896. Simply captivating!
The hotels new sustainability policy is leading the way and is something they are rightly proud of.
The installation of an osmosis machine delivers both still and sparking water and has ended plastic bottles in the hotel entirely. All water is free for the clients and there are even bottles at reception to take out for the day.
They have also switched to bio degradable coffee capsules for the coffee machine.
Shopping local for all produce has also eliminated plastic waste and the hotel has offset their CO2 emissions by supporting projects around the world, helping to combat climate change and sustaining the environment.
Buffet breakfast is complimentary and is served between 08.00 -10.30am in the Apolonia Restaurant.
This restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner serving seasonal Mallorcan Mediterranean cuisine.
You are welcome to help yourself to beverages throughout the day and night at the honesty bar.
If you are feeling romantic, then why not book a table for two, next door at Can Mostatxins which can be set up and privately catered, next to the old wine vat in the basement, with its unique ambience under the Gothic arches.
