Son Bunyola Hotel
Journey the dramatic route around thrilling hairpin bends and you will arrive on Mallorca’s west coast at the luxury five star Son Bunyola Hotel.
Set between the spectacular Tramuntana mountains and the Mediterranean sea, with jaw-dropping views in all directions, this vast estate, rich in history and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Mallorca’s most desirable and relaxing retreats.
At the heart of the 810-acre Son Bunyola estate with its abundant vines, citrus groves, almond and olive trees sit the original Finca and Tafona – previously containing the olive press – and several other buildings which house the spa and the restaurant, all blending seamlessly into their surroundings.
Hidden way in this tranquil and elevated position, the estate is hugged by the mountains behind and the centuries old agricultural landscape of terraces and waterways make the setting one of the most prized locations on the island.
The décor thought is the essence of Mallorca, with colour palettes of natural tones, rustic wood furniture, stone flooring, woven fabrics and wood-beamed ceilings, all culminating in a sumptuous yet cosy rural feel. Both internally and externally you are reminded of the estate’s past, vaulted ceilings, ancient wooden doors, exposed stone walls and wooden beams.
The hotel’s 26 luxury rooms and suites are located in the restored finca, including two stunning showcase suites in the Tafona with terraces, and two unique Tower Suites boasting 360-degree mountain and sea views – one of which was originally a medieval defence tower dating back to the 13th century.
The bedrooms and suites are each divided into eight categories and all have views. There are mountain and deluxe mountain view rooms, seaview and deluxe seaview rooms, with the deluxe rooms offering a garden or terrace.
In the suites categories, the Superior suites sleep four and Deluxe Suites offer breathtaking sea views, some having outside space. The Tower Suites, cleverly built into the medieval turrets, boast 360-degree views from their private roof terrace. The Tafona Suites situated in the old olive press have views out to the Mediterranean and their own private terraces.
All the rooms are beautifully appointed, individually decorated by local designer Rialto Living, bringing a “relaxed elegance” to this Mediterranean home by pulling together blues, greens and terracotta in the fabrics and furnishings. As you would expect of any Virgin Limited Edition hotel, the beds are super comfortable with soft pillows and crisp linen.
The heated pool is flanked with stylish sunbeds and a generous sea-facing terrace. Settle in for the day.
The main restaurant, Sa Terrassa, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner using local and seasonal ingredients, a second restaurant, Sa Tafona, open from June to September offers a Spanish Tapas menu. Complimentary wine tasting is offered twice a week at 6pm for you to sample divine local wines.
There’s a tennis court for an afternoon knockabout, complimentary bikes and hiking trails. Take a walk through the olive groves fringing the estate to reach the bijou Son Bunyola beach. If it’s too warm to walk, hail one of the hotel’s battery operated golf carts. Guests can book a treatment in the wellness area or settle in the lounge and enjoy a game of chess or pool on cooler days. There is a complimentary shuttle to the local towns of Valldemossa, Esporles and Bunyalbufar.
Son Bunyola Hotel has soul. From the love and care taken in its build, this idyllic location between the Tramuntana mountains and the Mediterranean sea offers a relaxed and informal atmosphere with impeccable service.

Something Different
As with all Virgin Limited Edition hotels, sustainability initiatives are at the heart of Son Bunyola.
Considered a conservation project, the architects and teams have spend several years painstakingly renovating this 600 year old property and, where possible, incorporating modern technology such as using energy collected from its air conditioning and refrigeration cooling systems to pre heat the property’s hot water and a biomass boiler powered by recycled wood chippings; the building’s thermal insulation has been upgraded and water is collected and reused for irrigation.
A management system will exist throughout the hotel to monitor and control its lighting, air conditioning and power consumption. A sustainable Mallorca is the way forward for a better and cleaner future for all.
What's Special
Richard Branson’s love affair with the island stretches back some 60 years and the Son Bunyola project truly has been a labour of love. Determined to conserve as much as possible in its renovation, traditional and local materials are at the core of the hotel’s design.
Local company Rialto Living’s combination of new design with existing historical elements such as the carpentry, stone arches and wrought ironwork allow for modern day comforts while ensuring the Finca’s history is celebrated. Guests will enjoy an abundance of beautiful Mallorcan charm.
One of the largest estates on the island, Son Bunyola is an important landmark which has been at the very forefront of the restoration plans allowing the project to enhance the incredible natural surroundings and bring visitors from across the globe to share in its magic.
