When the beach lovers leave, the walkers arrive to the island in huge numbers. There are numerous walks across the island but perhaps the best known walk is the GR221 – Mallorca Dry Stone Way.
Spanning some 90km, much of the route dating back to the Moorish occupation of the island, it stretches along the west coast and winds its way through the World Heritage Serra de Tramuntana mountains.
The entire route takes nine days although it can be done quicker depending on your level of ability. It starts at Port d’Andratx in the south and culminates in Pollenca in the north.
But the real beauty of the GR221 is that you can pick and choose individual stages as day walks and the Cúber Lake Walk is one of them, from the town of Sóller to the Reservoir at Cúber or vice versa.
Walking up to the reservoir is more strenuous and you will need to arrange a taxi at the end of the walk to take you back into town. More popular is the downhill walk which offers magnificent vistas as you decend from the reservoir to Sóller via the the spectacular Barranc de Biniaraix gorge.
Between April and October Bus No. L354 operates between Sóller and Pollensa, stopping at the Cúber reservoir which is very convenient, and for the rest of the year it would be a taxi one way Sóller – Cúber costing about €40.
At 750 metres above sea level with the promise of the Mediterranean sea sparkling in the distance, you find yourself in a very different Mallorca.
The Cúber Lake Walk
On arrival at the lake you are greeted with views extending along the Cúber valley, essentially a reservoir built to supply Palma with water in the 1970’s. Varying in depth depending on the time of year is is always a vibrant turquoise in colour and, with the towering mountains reflected the water, a photographer’s dream !
Follow the track keeping the reservoir on your right, head down its length until you see a small refuge and then onwards and upwards until you reach the Coll de l’Ofre which is the crest of the Sóller valley.
The path passes first through woodland and then opens out to the well worn dry stone path which leads you down, down, down the Barranc de Biniaraix through a terrific canyon.
Try your echo `hello´s ! As the path levels out you will pass over a stream and then into the village of Biniaraix, passing the old washing station on the way.
This picturesque village has a small square shaded by a huge plane tree.
Take a few moments and enjoy a well deserved beverage at Es Barranc de Biniaraix , a local favourite, before you head on down the road for the last 20 minutes or so into the main square of Sóller. This walk will take about 3 hours to complete.
