You definitely will not want to miss Tomeu Restaurant amb Arrels in the newly opened and dazzling Boutique Hotel Sant Jaume  in the heart of Palma.

Executive Chef Tomeu Caldentey was the first and still the only Mallorcan to be awarded a prestigious Michelin Star. The kitchen is run by Head Chef Joan Mells and his team who ensure Tomeu´s vision of cuisine centred around the classic dishes of Mallorca with a modern twist. The restaurant´ sub -title `Restaurant amb Arrels ´(meaning restaurant with roots ) leaves you in no doubt where Tomeu´s inspiration comes from.

And so the menu begins with a round of warm olive flavoured bread served with sobrassada ( traditional Mallorcan cured pork sausage) which is `lit´ at the table to create the sweetest caramelised flavour. A special mention here for Maitre D, Albert Escofet, who with his team go that extra mile to serve the food with knowledge and humour and in doing so make the event all that more special.

Small bites followed, each a delicious morsel, and then came the soup of the day, a rich broth of sweet potatoe flavoured with squid ink and decorated with deep fried calamari.

Egg  `Port de Sóller ´ has become a signature dish. A soft boiled egg laid on a layer of prawn carpaccio served with a maltese sauce. Delicious !

Hake with bell peppers followed which was equally tasty and then the palate cleanser. In days gone by, a simple sorbet but not so here. Where old traditions become today´s delights, we enjoyed a crushed ice `ginet ´churned at the table as ice cream would have been made some hundred years ago!

And then the sweet finale!  Save room ! A medley of sweet treats with a centrepiece of orange semifreddo sandwiched between honeycombed wafers. A naughty indulgence.

Open every day for lunch and dinner the restaurant offers a menu del diá, excellent value for such a memorable lunch at €28.50 per person. There are also two tasting menus, the Menu Santa Magda priced at €55.00 and the Menu Sant Jaume at €80.00.

So if you are a foodie then this restaurant is an absolute must while you are in Palma!
