Hotel Cort, a relative newcomer to the portfolio of boutique hotels in Palma wanted to bring something new to the city, encompassing a design edge, and what a fantastic job they have done.
This former bank with its century old history sits slap bang in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city is 17th century Plaza Cort, home to the parliamentary powers of the Island.
Architects Vicente Alcover Ripoll and Luis Moranto joined forces with award winning designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán to create a feeling of space and individual tranquility combining the architectural history and materials from the former bank with modern design and installations, creating an elegant, modern space.
The landings and hallways are blue and white complementing the maritime feel and are lined with wallpaper patterned with ´robes de llengües `(meaning “Cloth of Tongues”), a traditionally fabric of blue and white.
The bedrooms are almost all suites (just two are superior rooms). Some have fireplaces, spiral staircases, balconies or terraces. All have solid wood floors, linen curtains and even boast hand-made copper light switches. The rooms are themed in four colour ways pine green, terracotta, ultramarine and petrol and each offers huge beds delivering a sense of lavish and spacious comfort.
On the third floor you can enjoy a wonderful sun terrace with sun beds and a small splash pool.
It has to be The Island´ suite`. Positioned on the top floor overlooking Plaça Cort with its own private roof top terrace offering panoramic views over Palma towards the sea and the Tramuntana mountains in the distance.
You can enjoy a dip in your private jacuzzi, take a shower outside or lounge on a sunbed . The living room downstairs has a fireplace for the cooler months and a freestanding bathtub! As a clever off-seasoner, why not give yourself a little treat and upgrade to this magnificent suite and take home some extra special memories.
The Restaurant. The design is hip-chic with a nod of course to its financial past with irregular spaces and nooks all representing their own challenge to incorporate them into a functional restaurant space.
The floors are a mix of 15 different mosaics tiles which flow effortlessly through the space, complemented with dark wood furniture, leather chairs, mirrors, bookcases, wine stores, all warmed by an eclectic mix of ambient LED light fittings. The restaurant also spills out onto Plaza Cort where tables are set year round for you to watch the world go by.
Then of course to the food and service. Its an all day event, staring with an extensive breakfast menu, leading into lunch and then to dinner with the restaurant quickly becoming a local favourite. The philosophy of the Hotel Cort’s Mediterranean kitchen is excellent local produce and minimal interference. Adding seasonal products to the menu, there is always something new to enjoy.
Breakfast, which is included in the room rate, is served in the restaurant from 7.30am -11.00am offering everything from freshly squeezed orange juice to homemade pastries, yogurts and a warm selection of smoked salmon, bacon and eggs.
The restaurant is open from early until late serving snacks, lunch and dinner.
