The stylish Hopses Maricel & Spa sits grandly on a cliff top position, overlooking the Mediterranean sea.
It feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of Palma, yet its only minutes away by taxi, bus or car and there is private parking at the hotel.
The main building, originally a gracious sea-side villa, has been lovingly restored in majestic mid -18th century neo-classical style of noble columns and stone arcades.
As you enter the lobby, its hard to concentrate, as the infinity pool beckons, and the sea sparkles through the myriad of windows. With use of local stone, wood and natural fabrics the designer has created a wonderfully calm space in the two buildings that comprise the hotel, the original villa and a new structure which houses the spa and gym and well as additional hotel bedrooms.
The villa houses 29 spacious and light rooms offering either mountain or sea views.
A second newer ECO building with a further 22 rooms, some with plunge pool, is annexed to the hotel and accessed by a very clever stone clad under-road walkway.
All the rooms and suites are generously sized and almost all have a sea view. The Eco Dreamer and Eco Deluxe rooms in the new building come with their own plunge pool!
You will never feel crowded here as there is plenty of room to spread out. When you are feeling hungry you can either have a bite at the pool bar or step up to the terrace or inside to the Restaurant Maricel. There is also a lounge and cocktail area on the ground floor where you can enjoy live jazz every Thursday evening washed down with your favourite tipple.
More than a breakfast, it is in fact a culinary ´tasting´journey.
You will sample 6 courses of imaginative juice blends and smoothies, a variety of aromatic breads, sweet butters, mini-yoghurts of fruits and spices, pastries and maybe even a ´shot´ of tomato with quail eggs.
The first course being delivered….
Before the state of the art spa wing was completed, a series of caves built into the cliffs beneath the main house offered the only space for treatment rooms.
These caves have been retained as special treatment rooms and, choosing from a selection of Oriental massages on the menu, there is nothing quite like the the sound of the waves lapping up against the cliff while you are being pampered. Whilst these rooms are special you must take full advantage of the main spa area as well.
Bodyna Maricel Spa is truly a pampering space and just perfect for out of season travellers to rejuvenate. A staff of chic white-clad therapists offer an extensive spa in five treatment rooms. There’s also an indoor-outdoor heated pool, hammam, Jacuzzi and sauna, as well as garden to relax in after your treatment, swim or just plain to relax in. For those looking for something more active there is a fully equipped gym and private yoga, Tai-chi, or Pilates classes can be arranged.
Breakfast is served on the lower terrace and is included in the room price.
Restaurant Maricel has 2 lounges and a fantastic terrace in front of the ocean and is open for lunch and dinner offering cuisine of outstanding quality and with a view that is hard to beat.
Resident Chef Joan Portillo and his team offer a fantastic menu, which includes the famous traditional Mallorcan rice dish “arroz brut” with sobrassada, rabbit, pumpkin and mushrooms, as well as a fabulous selection of seafoods including red tuna steak, with glazed shallots and thyme juice and fried John Dory with toasted onions.
All to be accompanied of course by a wide selection of delicious home grown Balearic wines.
