Can Mostatxins tucked away in the historic heart of Alcudia´s labyrinth of small alleyways, is the first chic luxury hotel in this neck of the woods and is a welcome addition to the island’s high-end accommodation.
After a long association with Mallorca, the dream of opening a boutique hotel was fulfilled for Mark Worthington when he stumbled upon this derelict building some six years ago and there the love affair began.
It was a phased development, because as renovation work progressed, the building (first referred to in historical records in the mid 1400´s) began to reveal it´s secrets necessitating the emploment of an archaeologist to record and preserve the ancient features uncovered. And boy what a job they have done !
In a touching gesture to the last recorded occupier of the building Señor Raphel Valls who operated as a butcher in the early 1900´s and who sported an impressive handlebar moustache the new owners have named the hotel after him. Can Mostatxins is Catalan for the house of the mustachioed man!
As you enter the hotel you are wowed by the light-filled and spacious reception and breakfast area with it´s exposed brick walls, (a feature throughout the hotel), clean white decor, clever lighting and contemporary furniture.
The bedrooms are set over three floors, all are a mix of original and new features and each offers large comfy beds, crisp white linens and those lovely exposed brick walls.
The reputation of the kind and caring staff has already been established. They are truly dedicated to offering guests a truly Mallorcan experience.
This retreat measures up exceptionally well to the Islands high standards of boutique accommodation.
Without doubt, it has to be the courtyard pool area. With steep stone sides, which would have originally have been cut by hand from the bedrock, and set some 20 metres below pavement level, this has to be one of the island´s coolest chill-out areas.
The patio around the heated ( yes heated! ) splash pool is strewn with sofas and loungers and is open 24 hours a day.
There is an Australian style honesty bar where you can serve yourself a glass of your choosing, slip into the pool and look up to the day or night sky, your choice.
The building that accommodates the Tower suite is rumoured to be one of the oldest buildings in Alcudia, if not the oldest. The main entrance is through a very low Gothic style arched doorway dating back to the Middle Ages.
So what could be more special than to wrap yourself up in the history of this town and treat yourselves to the exceptional Tower suite.
Set over two-floors the Tower is accessible by its own glass passageway and has a private terrace overlooking the inner courtyard and spa pool.
On the ground floor, there is a living room, luxurious bathroom, and stairs up to the bedroom.
The upper level offers views of the rooftops of Alcúdia and the Tramuntana Mountains and the Bay of Pollensa in the distance.
Buffet breakfast is complimentary and is served between 09.00 -11.00am
You are welcome to help yourself to beverages throughout the day and night at the honesty bar.
If you are feeling romantic, then why not book a table for two, which can be set up and privately catered, next to the old wine vat in the basement, with its unique ambience under the Gothic arches.
